Audience

On-the-go employees at EcoScape Solvu, a hypothetical, environmental services organization, who must complete annual wellness training

  • These employees strongly prefer a mobile-first learning experience.

Problem

As part of its commitment to employee wellness, the hypothetical EcoScape Solvu’s HR department has started requiring annual wellness training. Initially, the training was provided by PowerPoint slides containing large amounts of text and a link to a final quiz at the end. Feedback surveys revealed employees would prefer this not be required training as they did not find it engaging.

EcoScape Solvu wanted a more engaging but relatively simplistic modality to provide employees with a wide range of wellness topics. The CEO strongly supported this initiative and wanted a different, mandatory wellness topic delivered to employees every six to twelve months.

My Responsibilities

Learners often seek out explainer videos on their own to fill knowledge and skills gaps. But can they serve as the whole learning product within a corporate setting?

I designed this brief video training with users in mind, requiring them to interact with the content every few minutes to complete in-video quizzes

Here’s what I did to create this all-in-one mobile video training:

  • Design document creation

  • Ideation and script development

  • Image sourcing

  • Audio narration

  • Video and sound editing

  • Publishing to LMS

[ID Model] Mayer’s 12 Principles of Multimedia Learning

To guide my efforts in delivering an effective learning product, I followed a selection of principles from Mayer’s 12 Principles of Multimedia Learning.

1

Temporal Contiguity Principle: people learn best when words and images are presented at the same time rather than sequentially.

This whiteboard-style doodle video allow learners to hear the audio narration at the same time as graphics depict each idea. Images quickly change as the narration proceeds.

2

Coherence Principle: learning is more effective if unnecessary information is excluded than included.

The graphics change every few seconds to illustrate one concept at a time. The sketches and any on-screen text are intentionally minimalistic to avoid cognitive overload.

3

Multimedia Principle: people learn best from a combination of words and pictures.

The minimal text that is included alongside images conveys essential meaning. Captions are available at the bottom of the video.

4

Modality Principle: people experience deeper learning from visuals and spoken words than text and visuals.

Audio narration is a core element of the video. Captions are available for enhanced accessibility.

5

Voice Principle: people learn better from conversational narration than from discernibly non-human voiceover.

I personally narrated the video with a friendly, personable tone. And, while the narration is not perfect, it is certainly from a real human!
